True Independence: What Are You Really Free From—and Dependent On?

In the last few days, I’ve had the topic of Independence Day floating around in my mind. Have you ever had that? Where you have something out there and you know that it’s important and you feel like there is more to it, but you can’t quite put your finger on it? When this happens, I know that Holy Spirit wants to talk to me about something, and I just need to be in a position of waiting and listening for when He’s ready to reveal Himself to me in an amazing way.
For the past six months, I’ve struggled with an unexpected health challenge that came on suddenly and without warning: ringing in my ears. It started slowly, sporadically, and quite unobtrusively—so much so that in the beginning I didn’t give it much thought. As time went on, it got louder and more consistent. It disturbed my sleep, concentration, mood, and energy and was just not very pleasant at all.
As a health coach, I know that there is a root cause to everything, and I just needed to discover it. And so, I started my journey of searching here and there, like looking for the exact right stone in a field full of stones. Just imagine that: you are in a huge field and you are looking for that one thing. You start in one corner, working your way through the field meticulously, turning over every rock you find, only to realize it’s not the one. So, you continue your search, day after day.
Come to find out, ringing in the ears, a symptom of tinnitus, can be caused by a LOT of things. And come to find out, no one really knows what causes it or what the answer is. Typical of the internet and conventional medicine, there is a plethora of articles and supplements that insist…this is the problem and you need to do this.
I can’t even begin to tell you what it’s like to have a constant ringing, buzzing, sharp piercing, or white noise sound going on in your brain 24/7. In my desperation to find even a morsel of relief, I tried a few of the “solutions,” only to find all their marketing that plays on your problems and sympathies empty in the end. No surprise there!
So, I did what I tell my clients to do: seek God first. He promises us that if we seek Him diligently, we will find Him (Jer 29:13). He promises that He will show us the way to go, the way that is best for us (Ps 32:8).
As I sought Him, He came alongside me to help me in my journey.
I prayed and asked for Him to heal me instantaneously, but according to His wisdom, He didn’t. He did, however, lead me and guide me one step at a time as I turned over the rocks in the field. And while I haven’t experienced the cure yet, He’s used this time to clean up the field and get some rocks out that I didn’t know were there, with a positive effect.
He’s not let the experience go to waste, and neither have I. On the one hand, I’ve had many days of disappointments from my prayers not being answered as I would have liked. I’ve had days of frustration, sadness, hurt, and yes, even anger over speaking His word over and over and not seeing the results—again, that I thought I should and expected to see.
On the other hand, every day was, and still is, a choice to press in or not. To believe or not. To trust in His wisdom and love for me and to go the distance and not give up. As a result, my faith in Him has simply deepened as I’ve had to press on, believing in the truth of His word over my circumstances or prayers.
A few days ago, He reminded me that His word will not return to Him void but will accomplish what it was sent to do. And that’s when the nudging about Independence Day came about.
What and who are we independent of, and what and who do we want to be independent of?
What and who are we in dependence on, and what and who should we be in dependence on?
These are some very powerful questions to sit and ponder on. The 4th of July in the U.S. commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, that great American document declaring the American colonies’ independence from Great Britain. John Adams, in a letter written to his wife Abigail on July 1, said, “It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.”
I ask the question, and seemingly God asks the same thing:
Where is that devotion today? We have become a nation that no longer walks in the freedom and liberty as God purposed it to be and seemingly our forefathers envisioned. We have become a nation independent from God Himself.
We need to be honest with ourselves, take a step back, and evaluate where we are. This nation, founded as a Christian nation on Christian principles and faith, has slowly become a nation independent from the Source who helped it gain independence to begin with. And the Christian Church at large has become not an extension of Christ’s rule and authority in this nation but has become subject to the rule and authority of the earthly government. It is no longer “in the world and not of the world,” standing apart, representing and reflecting God’s true Kingdom, but has become a reflection of society and the world. We have become a nation in dependence on the world and not God and His word.
We are in a time where I see two things happening.
One is that Holy Spirit is calling to the Bride because the time of the Great Wedding is drawing near. It’s time for all of us to re-evaluate where we are in our lives and faith and start making adjustments. Otherwise, we will be left behind like the 5 virgins in Matthew 25.
The other is that it is a time of testing and purification. In a time of ever-increasing noise, marketing, hacks, promises, and formulas, Holy Spirit is quietly whispering to all of us..
What do you really believe? WHO do you believe? Who and what are you dependent on that you should not be?
Let me ask you: where are you in your life, your faith, your health, and your purpose?
Have you tried everything under the sun and still are stuck? Maybe it’s time for a change: to stop doing things the world’s way and start doing things God’s way.
I’ve been brutally honest in my conversations with God over my health and the promises in His Word. Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” That’s pretty cut and dried! In a world where there is an attempt to constantly deceive us (like with all of the truth of the C-d vaccines coming out now) and keep us in bondage and fear, we can instead choose Jesus, who came to set the captives free.
So, I ask you today: what are you in dependence on in your life?
Is it food? Pharmaceuticals? Supplements? Social media? Negativity? What is it that you have made a god in your life in place of the One True God? Where does your trust lie? In the government? In influencers? Your physicians?
The Bible speaks of the mark of the beast in the last days. Now, no one really knows exactly what form this will come in, but it will come. What we do know is that you will not be able to get medical care, food, prescription medications, and more without this mark. If you are a born-again Christian reading this article, I have a very tough question for you. What will you do if you are suddenly told you cannot get your blood pressure or diabetes medication without taking the mark? It’s really a sobering thought.
We, as a nation—and including the Christian Church—have been brought to the place of fear and bondage in regard to our well-being, our health care, our spirituality, and our lives. Think about the C-d vaccine. Now, there is no judgment here if you took the vaccine. But ask yourself: why did you take it?
We have become independent of God and in dependence of man—including insurance, doctors, government “experts,” and government programs. We are independent of the Maker of the universe, our Husband, our Counselor, our Helper, our Sustainer, our Protector, our Healer, our All-in-All, and in dependence of a human system that does not have our best interest at heart.
Isn’t it time that we turn the tables?
Shouldn’t we be in dependence on the only One who can bring eternal life? Shouldn’t we be independent of sin and death, of disease that ravages our bodies and minds, and be in dependence of the mind of Christ and the stripes that He bore for our healing? Shouldn’t we be independent of man’s way of thinking when it comes to what to eat and be in dependence of God’s way, since He was the one who created us to begin with? Shouldn’t we be independent of Big Pharma and even all of the supplements that promise life and be in dependence instead on the Source of Life and Health?
This journey of mine, with my ear-ringing, has made me take a hard look at myself. I have been brutally honest with myself and with God. While I am still having to take supplements for right now to help the symptoms, I have no desire or intention to have to be dependent on them for the rest of my life.
He tells us that His word "is living and active and full of power" (Heb 4:12).
He tells us to pray, “Thy Kingdom come on earth as in heaven” (Mt 6:10), and there is no sickness, disease, or infirmity in heaven.
He tells us, “Your injury is incurable—a terrible wound. There is no one to help you or to bind up your injury. No medicine can heal you. I will give you back your health and heal your wounds,” says the LORD" (Jer 30:12-13,17).
He tells us that His Word is medicine and health to our whole being (Prov 4:22).
He tells us that He came to set the captives free from anything that they are in captivity to (Luke 4:18).
Man says that there is no cure for tinnitus, just like man says that there is not a cure for a lot of things. That’s not what God says, so whose report will I believe?
Being in dependence upon God doesn’t mean that you deny reality; it means that you defy reality.
It means that your ultimate foundation and truth is the Word of God and that His Word—Jesus and the Bible—will accomplish what it was sent to do. God didn’t just send Jesus so that you could go to heaven when you die if you believe in Him and confess Him as Lord and Savior.
He sent Him to take your sins AND your sicknesses upon Himself so that you didn’t have to bear the burden of them.
He came to set you free.
He came so that you could become a citizen of God’s Kingdom of Heaven so that you can walk in His Glory and not in the swamp of the world.
He came so that by your testimony you can be a light in this world, showing that there is a better way.
It all starts with a choice.
So, this 4th of July—Independence Day—I encourage each of you to ask yourselves the same questions God asked me. God didn’t cause me to ponder on this just for my sake, but for yours, too.
Take a look at every area of your life and ask yourself with all bravery, courage, and transparency:
What am I really independent of and what am I really dependent on?
Who am I independent of and who am I dependent on?
Depending on your answers, either thank God for the independence and freedom that you have in Him or ask Him to help you break free from the bondages, addictions, relationships, attachments, or associations you find yourself in.
God is faithful. He is merciful and righteous, and His justice is fair. If you are entangled beyond your control, like being wrapped in barbed wire from head to toe, know that God loves you and He is there to help you. It may not be in a way that you think or pray for, but His understanding and wisdom are so much higher than ours, and part of the journey is learning to trust Him regardless.
Jesus came and paid an even greater price than those who bought our freedom for this nation so long ago.
He wants to see you walk in independence from sin and walk in His freedom, and He knows your heart. He wants to help unwrap you from the barbed wire you’ve gotten yourself entangled in. Some has been of our own doing. Some has been because the evil one has taken advantage of our weaknesses and lack of understanding and commitment to the Lord.
Just like the struggle for independence for this nation was not easy, so it will not be for you. I’m not promising you like the world promises, or whatever every other program or advertisement promises. Jesus isn’t, either.
As a nation, we had to make a choice to fight for our freedom, to bleed and die for our freedom, and for our courage and commitment to be tested. Yet through the struggle, freedom was gained.
While the freedom that comes through Christ Jesus is free simply by a choice that is an act of our will, we have to walk that choice out every day of our earthly lives. We have to die to ourselves so that He might live in us and through us. We have to fight against an enemy that is real and determined for us to fail and fight against our old nature. Our faith will be tested for its genuineness and authenticity, and that testing will require courage, commitment, and dedication. Yet through the struggle, we are more than conquerors through the indwelling power of Holy Spirit and through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Happy Independence Day and happy In Dependence Day!
